Latest Saint-Pierre Martinique Guides & Articles

On May 8, 1902, the then 250-year-old town and its 30,000 residents were completely destroyed in about ninety seconds by a violent eruption of Mont-Pelée.

Louis Cyparis, the only survivor, was only able to escape alive because the prison cell in which he was imprisoned was properly ballasted to resist the heat.

The small village is wracked by the dreadful effects of the lava’s course, and the landscape is dominated by blackened ruins.

The best spot to begin your travels is the Musée Vulcanologique on rue Victor Hugo (daily 9am–5pm;?1.53), a small museum with twisted glass and soot-stained porcelain saved from the wreckage, with a startling church bell that previously rang Mass as its towering centerpiece.

It is just a a great destination, and you will find all you need to enjoy a great and wonderful time.
